DITL Of An Engineer - DR Meekings

Posted on: 02/11/2022

Nower Hill was very pleased to host Dr Helen Meekings, who gave our students an insight into a ‘Day in the Life’ of an Engineer. Dr Meekings has over 20 years international experience in Public Health Engineering, and specialises in sustainability, climate change, water sanitation, environmental and social risk management. Her recent achievements include contributing to COP26, and rebuilding communities devastated by natural disasters.

Over 80 Nower Hill students took part in the extracurricular event, with many staying behind to ask further questions. Students fed back that the event was “very inspiring” with many appreciating “hearing about the positive impact engineering can have on life necessities like water sanitation”. Nower Hill students enjoyed hearing about Dr Meekings educational and professional journey, with Year 10 students commenting on how “engineering is not just important but a necessity”

One group of Year 11 students (taking part in the Silver CREST award) took this opportunity to interview Dr Meekings, and benefit from her advice on the direction of their dissertation on water sanitation in England. Dr Meekings has offered to come back to further support this project, for which we are very grateful!

“I liked how we heard about her experiences with the tsunami in Indonesia and about the real life impacts of these events and Dr Meeking’s work” ~ Amir Malki.

“A big thank you to all the students who came to listen to my “day in the life” talk as an Environmental Engineer on Thursday 13th October. I really enjoyed talking with them and the discussion that followed my presentation. I hope that it was useful for all those who attended and they feel inspired to seek out more about the environment, climate change and related human rights issues, and how engineers can positively contribute to these challenging areas.” ~ Dr Meekings
