AMOS Bursary programme

Posted on: 17/04/2023

Nower Hill is delighted to announce that three of our Year 12 students - Janell, Rhianna and Destiny are participating in the AMOS Bursary programme. The Amos Bursary was started in 2008 by Baroness Valerie Amos and her sister Colleen Amos following the death of their parents who were both teachers. The Amos Bursary is a 5-year support programme for academically able Black students of African and Caribbean heritage. The Amos Bursary aims to 'normalise success and change the negative narrative surrounding Britain's young Black African and Caribbean people'.

There are 3 levels of support and all 3 of our students have been awarded with one of the 3 levels of support - Progressive, Associate and Scholar. All eligible students are part of the Progressive programme. Associate students are all those students invited for an interview and Scholar students are those who have performed best at the interview stage. Scholar students have the most access to what the Amos Bursary has to offer.  Through virtual and in-person seminars, workshops, conferences and experiences, the Bursary provides students with a five-year development programme of life changing activities.

We are very proud of all three of our students and we know that they will make the very best of this wonderful opportunity. Please keep an eye out for accounts of the different opportunities that they participate in.

Although our students have only very recently started the programme, they have already engaged in a couple of events. Here are their thoughts about the Amos Bursary so far:

'Despite being accepted as a scholar in the Amos Bursary programme just under a month ago, the programme has already broadened my knowledge on the different careers I can have and has also helped to develop the skills I need whilst operating in professional environments. They provide us with amazing opportunities, masses of valuable knowledge, and a huge network with people in a range of professions.' Destiny

'Being on the Amos Bursary Programme thus far has taught me many important lessons from networking to starting a new business. It has played a valuable role in guiding me to fulfil my academic goals.' Rhianna

Mrs Huggett, whom we are very grateful to for initiating and leading on the Amos Bursary project is pictured with our successful Bursary students.
