Solar Eclipse 2021

Posted on: 10/06/2021

On Thursday 10th June, we were treated to a partial solar eclipse, starting at around 10am, with maximum coverage (approximately 20%) at around 11am.

The science department prepared a small viewing station in the lower playground where students were invited to view the eclipse as a shadow, safely. In the event of persistent cloud, sensors were also set up to detect the change.

The sun made several appearances through the clouds, allowing some very enthusiastic students (and some pretty keen staff) to get a good view through their solar viewers.

Below are a selection of photos of the event, mostly captured through filters, following the path of the moon as it crossed the ‘top’ of the Sun.

The last picture is an experiment where a colander was used as a pin hole camera. You can see from the photo that the shadow of the circular holes appear crescent shaped, which occurs as they are each projecting a little image of the partially eclipsed Sun.

A big thanks to the technician team for helping to run the event and to everyone who popped down to see.
